    Description

Entamizole is a synergistic, dual-action antimicrobial and antiprotozoal formulation engineered to eradicate gastrointestinal infections. It combines Metronidazole, which disrupts bacterial and protozoal DNA synthesis in anaerobic environments, with Diloxanide Furoate, a highly effective luminal amoebicide that clears amoebic cysts from the intestinal tract. Together, they clear both tissue-dwelling and intestinal-lumen pathogens to treat complex diarrheal diseases.

    Ingredients

    Each tablet contains:

    • Metronidazole BP: 200 mg

    • Diloxanide Furoate BP: 250 mg

    Drug Class

    Antiamoebic, antiprotozoal, and antibacterial combination

    Dosage Form

    Tablet

    Uses

It is used to treat bacterial and protozoal infections like:

    • Acute amoebic dysentery (severe diarrhea with blood and mucus)

    • Chronic intestinal amoebiasis (long-term amoebic infections)

    • Hepatic amoebiasis (amoebic liver abscesses, used alongside tissue amoebicides)

    • Giardiasis (small intestine infection causing watery diarrhea and cramps)

    • Mixed intestinal bacterial infections and gastroenteritis

    Dosage

To be used as per doctor's prescription. The standard adult dose is typically 1 to 2 tablets taken three times daily for 5 to 10 days, depending on the severity of the infection.

    In case of Overdose

Consult a doctor or contact SMS Pharmacy support immediately in case of an overdose. Symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, dizziness, ataxia (loss of balance), or numbness/tingling.

    Missed Dose

Consult a doctor or pharmacist in case of a missed dose. If you remember within a few hours, take it immediately with food. If it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed tablet. Do not double the dose.

    How To Use

To be used as per doctor's prescription. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. It must be taken with or immediately after food to significantly reduce the risk of stomach irritation and metallic taste. Complete the entire course even if symptoms disappear early.

    When Not to Use

Do not use in case of:

    • Previous allergic reaction to metronidazole, nitroimidazole derivatives, or diloxanide furoate

    • Active or chronic central nervous system (CNS) disorders

    • Severe blood disorders or bone marrow depression

    • First trimester of pregnancy, unless considered absolutely critical by a specialist

    Side Effects

    Side effects include:

    • Abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

    • An unpleasant, sharp metallic taste in the mouth

    • Furry tongue or loss of appetite (anorexia)

    • Headache, dizziness, or drowsiness

    • Darkened or reddish-brown urine (a harmless side effect of metronidazole)

    Precautions & Warnings

Seek immediate help in case of an allergic reaction (such as hives, facial swelling, or breathing issues). Stop taking the medication and consult your doctor immediately if you experience neurological side effects like numbness, tingling, burning pain in the extremities (peripheral neuropathy), or seizures. Use with caution in patients with severe liver impairment.

    Drug Interactions

Do not use or consult your doctor if you are taking:

    • Oral anticoagulants like Warfarin (metronidazole dramatically potentiates its blood-thinning effect)

    • Lithium (risk of toxic lithium accumulation)

    • Phenytoin or Phenobarbital (can reduce the effectiveness of this medicine)

    • Disulfiram (can cause acute psychoses and confusion)

    Food Interactions

The food interactions that should be considered while using Entamizole are:

    • Strictly avoid alcohol and alcohol-containing products (like cough syrups) during treatment and for at least 48 hours after finishing the course. Combining alcohol with metronidazole triggers a severe "disulfiram-like reaction," causing rapid heart rate, severe flushing, throbbing headache, nausea, and vomiting.

    • Taking the tablets with dairy products or high-fat meals is completely acceptable and can help soothe potential stomach upset.

    Storage/Disposal

Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the blister strip inside its original box until consumption. Keep away from children.

    Control Drug

    No

    Quick Tips, if any

    • Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet due to its extremely bitter taste.

    • Always finish the full 3x10's packet or the exact duration prescribed by your doctor to ensure the infection is entirely wiped out and to prevent recurring chronic symptoms.
